Background Information
After the Civil War, the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution outlawed slavery throughout the United States. As part of the Reconstruction following the war, federal troops were sent to the South to ensure that blacks received better treatment than they had before the war. Although blacks were given the right to vote and full citizenship, some Southern whites used violence to keep them from voting and from trying to achieve equality. Many former slaves became sharecroppers who worked the land, but received only a small share of the crop.
